Dr Matthew Read - Putting AI Technology Under The Knife

Andy Fithall Season 1 Episode 33

Dr Matthew Read was pretty young when he knew he wanted to be a surgeon.

Having been exposed to medical clinics which were managed by his mother, and having the aptitude for fixing problems, his vision of his future was pretty clear.

But, as he discovered, there is never a straight line between dreams and success, and for over 20 years Matthew pursued medical study, facing rejection, and even a stint in the army before getting to where he is now, a multi award winning Upper GI (gastro intestinal) surgeon operating out of St Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.

Dr Read is also a board member of The Hope Fund a charity created by expert medical practitioners, who mission is to raise money for research into Upper GI diseases which traditionally don't active much funding, but who's outcomes for patients are poor. They also raise awareness for these diseases, which could be easily branded "unsexy cancers".

Not happy with just changing lives on the operating table, Matthew is also working on technology used during surgery which will enable real time assistance and coaching from experts around the globe, increasing countries like Kenya's access to appropriate treatment, where currently there is very little.

He is also passionate about reducing the waste in surgical procedures, which can, not only save money and the environment, but reduce time wasted making the surgery time more effective, reducing the wait times for people who are desperately needing the treatment.

Dr Matthew Read is on my list of "ones to watch", I'm certain we will see much more of him in the future, and it was an honour to be part of his first podcast.

It will no be his last, that I can assure you.
